I think the existence of this market niche is why this book has survived. A prime example of how to burn money in making crappy films. The biggest problem here were probably the two lead actors. Among the students are two unlikely new roommates: Gene (J. Barton), a quiet, introspective bookworm; and Finny (Toby Moore), a carefree and wildly popular athlete. Based on his earlier short story "Phineas", published in the May 1956 issue of Cosmopolitan, it was Knowles's first published novel and became his best-known work. Having read the book 2x in school, I remember the story fondly. In my mind, sometimes I intertwine the pair of remakes, and while I preferred the original version, I didn't think this one was that bad the second time I viewed it. I think that Gene was casted and played brilliantly, outwardly soft-spoken and innocent, inwardly driven and insecure, allowing the viewer to see what he was capable of doing deep inside, and then to some degree seeing his guilt and shock of realizing what he had done to Phineas. Also featuring Hume Cronyn (who gave his final screen appearance as the Headmaster), A Separate Peace was produced for the Showtime premium cable network, where it first aired in the fall of 2004; an earlier theatrical film version was released in 1972. There's just too much going on in Gene's head to explain in a movie, especially to someone unfamiliar with the book. This film proves that a small story can be much more meaningful than a large one. I bought this movie with very low hopes, seeing that most of the IMDb reviews called it trash. It is a small screen production and television was far from the quality we have today, so it is a bit sad to see that's where Yates' films landed at that point. I see the budget here was almost 5 million and that's quite a lot. It is the depth of character and feeling that makes the book such a classic and this movie takes those things and utterly destroys them in its rewriting. Now they are back in the studio – with great precautions, due to covid-19. I saw this DVD on sale and bought it without a second thought, despite not even having known it was out since this is one of my favorite books of all time. Then just a few days ago, I saw a new DVD displayed in another library, and I was surprised that they made a movie again. Taglines | It is the story of two men, who are somewhat friends and somewhat enemies and all in the face of the competitive nature of their sport. Not recommended. I don't even know... there is a scene in this movie where a kid dresses up as Hitler, actual Hitler and after that they just cut back to the next day like it was nothing. Great memorable quotes and script exchanges from the A Separate Peace movie on Quotes.net. This might make it useful for showing in high school classrooms but makes it a tedious business for intelligent viewers. Wendy Kesselman adapted the novel by John Knowlses for the small screen here, but the writers' names aren't that known here. Top comments A Separate Peace does not have any comments (yet). All in all, I did like the movie, although it did take a little (and sometimes a lot) of liberty with the original book, and admittedly it didn't carry out all the underlying themes of the book. Strong friendship between students slowly turns into bitter rivalry with fatal consequences. | Metacritic Reviews. The book of course gives a much deeper, broader picture. I didn't care for either movie version. "A Separate Peace" takes place mostly on the campus of an upper class New England prep school, a quiet and isolated corner of a world on the brink of World War II. And I didn't even know about. They do however drive the story, which seemed to be their purpose, so I can accept them at the end of the day. Lepper), many characters are missing and famous lines/thought are missing. Parents Guide. An American classic and great bestseller for over thirty years, A Separate Peace is timeless in its description of adolescence during a period when the entire country was losing its innocence to World War II. okay....i haven't seen the movie yet (were watching it in English this Monday) but i just read the book.....awesome book....but the only thing is that GENE DRIVES ME UP THE WALL AND ONTO THE CEILING!!!!!! Neither seemed to do the book justice. It is a bit disappointing as there are moments in the script that feel as if they could have been the essence of a quality film. Movie Info An intellectual student (J Barton) and a star athlete (Toby Moore) develop a complex friendship at a prep school during World War II. The behavior of one of the 'friends' remains a mystery if we don't go to Freudian explanations of love and death. But I can't agree that there is no suggestion of a homosexual love interest in this movie. | Leonard Maltin should have rated this one BOMB, not the 72 version. To me, seeing it portrayed on-screen accentuated the emotion and personalities of the characters in a positive way--Phineas' energy, Leper's peculiarity, Brinker's always-in-charge demeanor,Gene's inner self masked by his outward demeanor, which flashed unexpectedly at times. The director is. Doesn't do the book justice. I thought it was a very good adaptation. Gene Forester and his roommate Finny are in their room one night, Finny sleeping, Gene reading, when Brinker Haldey and several other boys take them out of their room. Injury and relationships with fellow teammates play a major role as well. A Separate Peace (TV Movie 2004) - IMDb. Over all disappointing.
